No, really... just take a look at all I've done in the last year...

It's not that I haven't been working on things. I have, just not very fast. To say these last two years have been overwhelming is an understatement. A huge one. I won't bore you with the details. All I can say is that I'm working on getting back on track. A lot of my focus has been marketing for my back list of titles. I have 14 of them and I'm trying to keep them from slipping off into the void.

It's time consuming, y'all. Most of my days are spent putting together promo images and then scheduling them for all the platforms out there. Between Facebook, Twitter and Instagram I'm lost in a digital world, most days. And I'm adding one more to the mix... Book + Main. Why? Because Facebook used to be friendly. Now it's like the bully neighbor kid that changes all the game rules and then pushes you down into an anthill and then lights you on fire. Yeah, I went there. But seriously, for as much work as it is to connect with people and then engage with them only to lose it all when the algorithms get changed? And it happens ALL THE DAMN TIME which is super frustrating, but I'm trying my hardest to roll with the changes.

This is the best way I can describe how it's been. And I'm not the cat.

Funny, right? I wish it weren't so accurate though.

So while I'm a work in progress, there are a few things I do have going on that I wanted to share with you!

Last year Candace Knoebel and I created a boxed set for our Game of Hearts novels. The boxed set turned one on July 21st. With all the promotion... nada. It's a bit disheartening.

Recapping 2018...

I'm not sure about the rest of the world, but 2018 was a slump year for me. In more ways than I can even begin to understand. Writing took the back seat to family. Royalties tanked. Life moved forward.

My daughter started her first year of college. My son started his senior year of high school. I published one book.

2018 has been my hardest year since I first published. The market is getting harder, it seems, with each passing year. But this year? This year has been an uphill struggle. At points I was ready to just throw in the towel. Quit and move on to other avenues that would remove me from the utter disappointment of an unsuccessful year. There's nothing like feeling as if you've let down not only yourself, but your family as well. It's been an absolute kick in the gut. But I told myself that I have to take the good with the bad. Things have a way of turning themselves around, I just have to push harder to break through the negativity that so easily settled on my shoulders. I have enough on my shoulders as it is, I don't need that additional burden weighing me down to the point of surrender.

As for 2019, I can only hope things smooth out. Become less stressful. But there aren't any guarantees. My daughter will be starting her second semester of college, possibly transferring back home once it's complete. She's not overly impressed with dorm living, and being two hours away from home has been hard on her. My son will graduate in May. Turn 18 in July, and then ship out to boot camp in August. One will leave the nest, and the other might return. As for me, I have a date with my editor and plan on forcing myself to focus. Nothing will ever be smooth sailing, so I might as well get used to it and learn to navigate around the rougher parts. I've always loved writing and it's time I got back to it.

I wish you a prosperous and very happy new year. Let's hope 2019 brings about better days and less hardships. Successes that make you grin ear-to-ear, and an abundance of excitement that will carry us through to 2020.

Sweat beaded everywhere. Face, chest, back. It was like a sauna. Thunder rumbled in the distance and the wind picked up. After I closed the door, I scooped the first aid kit from the bottom of the stairs where it must have slid when I dropped it.

The sound of Lexie’s voice guided me into the kitchen where she stood at the sink with her phone tucked between her shoulder and her ear as she started to unwind the shirt from her hand.

Her harsh laugh stopped me from taking another step.

“I couldn’t tell you what St. Augustine looks like. I’ve been stuck in remodeling hell,” she said, sharply before adding, “Hang on, I have to put you on speaker.”

She took the phone from her shoulder, moved it to the window ledge, then propped it up. “So how’s your summer been so far?”

“What summer? The boss found out I had a lot of free time now, and he piled on the hours,” Heath answered, adding a dramatic sigh.

Lexie laughed again, though it sounded amused this time.

“How is that funny? You get sand and sun. I get florescent lighting and rude customers,” Heath grumbled.

“Hey, I’m working, too. Besides, weren’t you the one who was complaining about needing more money?”

“Yeah, well, I didn’t mean I wanted to work my entire summer away,” he said.

“How’s everything else?”

“Same. You?”

I wanted to back out of the room and give her a little privacy, but I couldn’t move because I didn’t want to miss her reply.

She shrugged as if he could see her. “Just working.”

“Lex… has it been bad?”

“No.” Her answer sounded strained.

“Uh-oh, spill it,” Heath said.

Her light tone was clearly forced when she said, “There’s nothing to spill, dummy.”

“Lex, I know you. I know you better than almost anyone. What’s up?”

“It’s nothing, really. Just different… ya know?” she answered.

Heath sighed. “I know. But hey, look at it this way… you don’t have to deal with the assholes while you’re there. At least you get a break from here. Damn it, I gotta go. My lunch break is over. Talk to you soon?”

Her head bobbed. “Yeah, of course. You call me, though, since your schedule is so busy.”

“I will. Take care, Lex. And try to have a little fun. I want a full report on St. Augustine when I call you again. Bye!”

The phone disconnected, but I didn’t move until Lexie turned the cold tap on the sink. “Fun. Yeah, right.”

We're days away from the release of my upcoming novel Outcast Like Me.

While I normally write contemporary romance, this book, and it's characters, took me on a writing journey I'd not been on before.

How so?

Well, for one thing Outcast Like Me is a Young Adult novel. Lexie and Dylan are complex characters, both dealing with social pressures on different spectrum's. In this novel you'll get to see the rise and fall of social status. You'll get an inside look into what bullying can do to a person. How behaviors change in order to keep on keeping on. But you'll also get to see that how with just a kind word, or a hand reached out to pull you from the darkness, can make all the difference in the world.

It's been a long time since I've been to high school, but even in all that time, some things have, and will, remain the same. Bullying is one of them. Social cliques is another. You're either one of them, or no one at all. You either fit in, or you don't. Some kids get looked over completely, while others incur the wrath of consistent verbal and physical attacks. It was my hope with writing Outcast Like Me that I could step into Lexie's world and show those who find themselves in similar situations that, no matter what anyone else says, or does, they are still a person who is loved. They have value. They have meaning. And that they should never bend or break because of someone else's opinion of who they are.

Nobody is the same. It was never intended to be that way since the beginning of time. We might think alike, dress alike, or even act alike, but at the end of the day every single person is a reflection of themselves and no one else. At the end of the day... loving who you are and being true to yourself is all that truly matters.

This book is personal to me. I've dug inside myself and brought bits and pieces of my own history to life, changing a few things to make it work for the story line, but the overwhelming feelings that came with the situations I faced in my younger years gave me the insight and foresight to help Lexie find herself as well. There's also bits and pieces of things that have happened to my own kids, and the things they have witnessed during their years of high school.

Now, I know it seems I went off on a bit of a tangent, but I promise there's a reason :) With the upcoming release of Outcast Like Me, I'm planning on having several giveaways happening on my Facebook author page that will run up to release day, and several after. I'm reaching out to FB pages and Bloggers to do takeovers and giveaways. There will be a lot going on, and I don't want you to miss any of it! The giveaways are intertwined with the theme of the story. Although the book is about bullying, the moral/theme of the story is about finding value and meaning within your own self.

Hello!

It's been very busy at my house. Between finishing the first draft of Outcast Like Me (release info coming soon), throwing a surprise 80th birthday party/family reunion for my grandmother, my daughter graduating high school, throwing a graduation party for her, and now getting said daughter ready to head off to college, my plate has been upgraded to a tray!

My bank account cries every time I log into Amazon Prime.

True story.

All I can say is thank God for scholarships, moms who insist on helping, and a good sense of humor. I've needed all three to keep my sanity!

I look forward to getting back into some form of normalcy come September. Although, it's probably just wishful thinking since my son starts his senior year of high school in August and revs up the crazy train all over again.
